Phonics Training
Do you want your child to be independent reader at early age without any struggle? Then Phonics class is the best. Scientific research found that explicit systematic phonics instruction is the most effective way to teach children how to read. Some children will end up having serious reading difficulties without phonics.
Phonics is a way of teaching children the sounds made by individual letter or letter groups (for example, the letter “c” makes a /k/ sound), and teaching children how to merge separate sounds together to make it one word (for example, blending the sounds /k/, /a/, /t/ makes CAT).
English has a complicated spelling system. It is important to teach letter sound mappings in a systematic way, beginning with simple letter sound rules and then moving onto more complex associations.
Phonics help us remember the rules of sounds and letters like; “when two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking.” Phonics are meant to give kids a heads up on how certain letters sound when together, so as they encounter new words, they will know how to sound.
In Daisy Montessori we follow Jolly Phonics which is a fun and child centred approach to teaching literacy through synthetic phonics. With actions for each of the 42 letter sounds, the multi-sensory method is very motivating for children. The letter sounds are split into seven groups. Jolly Phonics teaches children the following five key skills for reading and writing.
- LETTER SOUNDS
Children are taught the 42 main letter sounds. These include alphabet sounds as well as digraphs such as sh, th, ai and ue.
- LETTER FORMATIONS
Using different multi-sensory methods like sandpaper letter tracing, verbal instruction children learn how to form and write the letters.
- BLENDING
Children are taught how to blend the sounds together to read and write new words.
- IDENTIFYING THE SOUNDS IN WORDS (SEGMENTING)
Listening for the sounds in words gives children the best start for improving spelling.
- TRICKY WORDS
Tricky words have irregular spellings and children learn these separately.
We all want our children to grow well and be ready to conquer the world by storm. The best way to do so is by preparing them right from the very beginning. And the very first step in the process is phonics training. Phonics is a training course where the students are taught the relationship between a letter and how it sounds. This training educates the students with the necessary knowledge to sound out words and then how to combine them better. Phonics is the foundation of the learning process. A strong foundation is a gateway to a successful future. So, naturally, it is something one must invest in.
Daisy Montessori is a preschool and daycare in Manyata Tech Park. At Daisy Montessori, one can enroll a child for phonics training for their overall growth. Our phonic training program has a child-centric approach that will make the lessons a fun activity.
